NOT the best start to the season as the REDS go down to Sydney FC in their first home game of the 2019/20 campaign. However after 24 hours and taking my angry pants off and replacing them with my RED pants I can now type this article with a little bit more balance and optimism.
Verbeek who played a very young line up with a lot of key personal either absent or starting on the bench must be somewhat pleased to have matched the champions for the majority of the night and even taking the game up to Sydney in the last stages as the REDS battled with 10men for over 30mins. He and along with REDS fans can also seek some comfort as the boys showed a lot of character to come back from 2 zip down after 28mins to draw level on 51 mins after 2 excellent goals from the REDS. The first from Mileusnic just before half time to get the lads back into the contest and what a goal it was , a freekick that dipped, swerved and smashed the back of the net leaving Sydney’s keeper no chance. Young gun and future superstar Toure gave Adelaide their 2nd and equalizer on 51mins as the 19yr old calmly slotted the ball into the back of the onion bag to send Hindmarsh into raptures and sheer delight , wow what a player , what a special talent and what a diamond. I cant wait to cheer this lad on all season long. I’m pretty sure about a million South Aussie REDS fans agree with me.
But the smiles were ripped of the Adelaide United faithful on 60mins when Strain was given a RED CARD for a foul on Le Fondre who was through on goal. Adelaide United fans who were still singing the praises of Toure and thinking of taking all 3 points, now found themselves looking at the clock and asking themselves can the boys hang on for a valuable point. Wow how quick can football change and how quick can ones beer start to taste not as nice as it did some 9mins ago.
Of course Adelaide could not hold on for the draw and on 87mins. REDS HEARTS were ripped out of them as McGowen smashed home a header thus giving the SKY BLUES the chocolates. What a kick in the guts for Adelaide fans as the oxygen was sucked out of Hindmarsh by one late goal and doomed us all to defeat.
Life sucks sometimes being a football fan but we must stay positive, the season is marathon not a sprint and we have some marathon runners to come back into the side, one James Troisi and one very solid Mirko Boland, two very strong midfielders with goals and defensive insurances between them. Adelaide United will field stronger 11s than what started in round 1 last night giving REDS fans hope and faith. United has some great promising talent and thoroughbreds at its disposal this season. So all is not lost , Adelaide is not a “SHITHOLE” Lucy Zelic . Adelaide is Beautiful on and off the pitch !
