To quote the great Bill Murray in Ghost Busters….” We came, We saw, We kicked some ass ” and our mighty REDS have certainly done that in the last 7 days. Starting with a spanking of Melbourne City on Wednesday night in the FFA CUP final . Adelaide’s young guns of talent were far to good for a very lifeless City who had no answers trying to combat United’s quick ball movement and lightening speed in the front third.
Toure of course the star of the show, netting the first goal of the night and setting up the 2nd to be a very worthy Mark Viduka medallist. His first goal had shades of NED ZELICS FAMOUS strike all those years ago with a cheeky near post finish to embarrass the goal keeper. His body strength and sharp turn plus beautiful through ball to set up the 2nd goal just showed REDS fans what a complete player this young man really is. So of course it was no surprise when Adelaide United the next day offered Toure a new 3 year senior deal. Praise the footballing gods he signed too!
The win in front of 15,000 crazy South Aussies of course made history, United with 3 FFA cup titles more than any other side and the first team to also go back to back defending last seasons victory over Sydney Fc in the final. The FFA Cup really does enjoy the city of Adelaide maybe it is our beautiful wide streets and fantastic weather, or maybe we should ask Lucy Zelic why the Cup loves staying in the city of churches?
Adelaide though after two losses in the league really needed to capitalize on this confidence boosting victory midweek and much to every REDS FANS sheer delight they did that on Saturday away to the Newcastle Jets. After being a goal down at halftime , the lads dug deep and showed a lot of maturity and character not often associated with young sides to come back and win 2-1, taking a well needed 3 points back home and kicking our A league season into gear. Riley McGree our other South Australian hero was the star in Newcastle scoring a brace and really stamping his authority as our new number 10. A bloke scoring for fun this year!
So are the REDS BACK ? Have they just started the season now after 2 opening game loses ? As REDS fans we would like to think so but I do know this much, seeing young South Australian talent get a chance this year appears to be on the footballing menu under Verbeek and that’s something we all want to tuck into. What a feast we have in front of us!
